The Fruit Basket of the Antelope Valley

Littlerock takes its name from the Little Rock Wash that passes through the area, and its nickname from what used to grow here. The community historically supported orchards of almonds, apples, peaches and pears, running along the roadsides near Highway 138, and it has been known as the Fruit Basket of the Antelope Valley on that basis. Permits Go Through Los Angeles County

Littlerock is unincorporated, so building permits go through Los Angeles County Public Works at its Antelope Valley district office, 335 East Avenue K6 in Lancaster, rather than through the City of Lancaster or the City of Palmdale.

For cabinetry the question mostly does not arise: the California Residential Code lists "painting, papering, tiling, carpeting, cabinets, counter tops and similar finish work" within the finish work exemption at Section R105.2. It arises when the job moves a sink, relocates gas, or adds or moves circuits, which in a small kitchen is more likely than usual, because gaining space often means moving something. Littlerock sits at 2,890 feet on the rising southern edge of the valley, above both Lancaster at 2,359 and Palmdale at 2,660. It is cooler than the valley floor and it sits in the same arid regime.

The USDA Forest Service Wood Handbook assigns recommended interior moisture content by region rather than by elevation: an average of 8 percent across most of the United States, 11 percent in damp warm coastal areas, and 6 percent in the dry southwestern area with individual pieces between 4 and 9 percent. Lancaster, the nearest station with published normals, averages 6.81 inches of precipitation a year. The Handbook adds that no significant dimensional change occurs when wood is fabricated at a moisture content matching where it will live.

Highway 138, and Deliveries

State Route 138, which runs through Littlerock and is also known as Pearblossom Highway, is the main east to west route along the southern edge of the Antelope Valley. It carries roughly 25,000 to 30,000 vehicles a day and has a long standing reputation as one of the more dangerous roads in the country.

For a cabinet job that translates into one practical point: deliveries and installation visits are worth scheduling off peak rather than through it, and it is a reason to prefer a shop that plans its own delivery rather than subcontracting it blind.
